Unblock Channel 4 with Smart DNS
Channel 4 is one of the most popular TV channels in the whole of the UK; it was born at the time when there were just 3 TV channels available in the UK, them being the publicly owned BBC1, BBC2 and the commercially funded ITV. This was all the way back in 1982 when TV was very much in its infancy and definitely not the satellite type we have nowadays. Along with Channel 4 came S4C. S4C was for those that spoke Welsh and wished to watch TV programmes broadcast in that language, there was huge protests over the fact there was no Welsh speaking TV channels, with even the leader of a major political party threatened to hunger strike unless this need was met. Eventually with the launch of Channel 4 came S4C for the Welsh contingent.
Of course nowadays Channel 4 is a lot more than just Channel 4 and S4C, there is now a dedicated free-view movie channel Film4 (a really fantastic channel shows great movies from around the world all for free), 4Music, E4 and many more. In 2007 Channel 4 introduced their first HD channel offering in Channel 4 HD and earlier this year released their second HD channel a Channel 4+1 a “timeshift” channel.
Channel 4 also – in my opinion – offer the best online streaming service. Unlike BBC iPlayer where you just have the last month or so of broadcast programmes to watch 4oD (4 on Demand) offers their entire catalogue of programmes to watch whenever you want, the only downside being there are ads in their videos but it is worth it for the sheer amount of content that is available. Other channels would just usually exclude popular series and relegate them to having to be bought to be streamed, available on Netflix or are available on DVD/Blu ray, so 4oD certainly is my go to TV streaming service.
As for the kind of programmes Channel 4 has to offer, it varies widely but Channel 4 is best known for its hard hitting documentaries, fantastic comedies and gritty dramas. Channel 4 has broadcast some of the most popular British television of all time, with programmes like Skins, Peep Show and The Inbetweeners really becoming integrated into British culture. Such was the popularity of these shows two of the three went on to spawn US spin offs (that unsurprisingly weren’t very good). Their documentary series “Dispatches” is also heralded for its work on uncovering some of the burning issues going on both nationally and internationally in a fair and impartial manner.
A lot of TV programming is nowhere near the standard Channel 4 has and they continue to hit it out of the park time after time, so it’s a shame that it can’t be accessed from anywhere but the UK, luckily though there is Smart DNS to sort that problem out.
