USA network launched all the way back in September 1977 originally as UA-Columbia/MSG but then just three years later in April re-launched to the much catchier name of USA Network. The network was initially not a very big player in the grand scheme of things, dwarfed by the likes of older more established networks, recently though USA Network has steadily been gaining popularity and is available to over 96.3 million pay TV households in the US.

This rise in popularity for the network is namely due to two things, their original programming and reruns of network TV shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit/Criminal Intent and NCIS. It is worth mentioning too that USA Network shows frequently movies from the likes of Universal Studios, Walt Disney and Warner Bros. Their original programming began in the 1990s and was well received with shows such as Silk Stalkings and La Femme Nikita. Their programmes only started to become more popular as time went on as they added quality show after quality show. The likes of Monk, White Collar, Suits, Burn Notice and Royal Pains are held in high esteem by the general US TV watching public.
USA Network is also home to select sporting events, in its past the network was heavily involved in broadcasting the likes of Major League Baseball games and NHL. As TV started to become more segmented and paid cable became more and more prevalent, after the purchase by NBC they immediately merged the sports division into NBC Sports. USA Network is home to some of the biggest sporting events still though with the likes of the Olympics and they act as an overflow buffer for football matches and NASCAR races.
I think the wide array of programming available is a fantastic reason to give USA Network a go. I am particularly impressed with their sporting pedigree considering it is all free. In the UK you would never get a Premier League match on free TV due to the likes of BT Sport and Sky paying exorbitant amounts of money for the rights to broadcast the games. USA Network is flying an important flag of sorts that shows free sports programming is still important.
