The Food Network as you may be able to guess from the name is a channel that is dedicated to programming about food in all its various forms and varieties. Food Network was founded back in 1993 (dubbed TV Food Network back then until 1996) in New York City and has had quite a tumultuous history, with many ups and downs. 1997 showed for the first time that the channel had the legs to become something rather big as Erica Gruen was hired to be CEO of the company (becoming only the second woman in history to be a CEO of a US TV network) and helped pushed the Food Network as it started to become a staple of US television.
What Gruen did to help increase the popularity of the channel was instead of marketing it as TV for people that love to cook the angle of TV for people who love to eat seemed to be a much more all-encompassing philosophy. It certainly worked as viewership continued to rise and the channel branched out into more countries. Food Network first foray into foreign countries was the UK where it launched back towards the end of 2009, then Asia a year after. In the UK Food Network was originally only available on the Sky service but has since been pretty much added to every TV service within the country meaning pretty much 100% coverage of the whole country. Food Network further tried to push their brand when they released two games for the Nintendo Wii in 2008 and 2009 called Iron Chef America: Supreme Cuisine and Cook or Be Cooked trying to capitalize on the Shovelware craze the Wii had towards the middle to end of its lifetime.
As for programming Food Network has produced some very popular shows both for those who cook and for those that just love to eat. Usually throughout the daytime more instructional food programmes are shown whilst during the evening food entertainment programmes take their place. There have been some rather popular original programming from the Food Network namely stuff like “Emeril Live!” which soon became the channels signature series. There has also been Iron Chef America (a remake of the Japanese original). To indicate the success of the Iron Chef series Americas First Lady herself Michelle Obama starred and received very good ratings. Other popular programmes include the likes of Good Eats, Paula’s Home Cooking and many more.
