Columbia Broadcasting System or CBS as it is more commonly known is the second largest in the world. CBS was founded all the way back in 1927 under the name United Independent Broadcasters though at this time they were just a radio broadcaster. At this time the network desperately need investors so along came Columbia Records to save the day as they invested money to keep the company going though it was renamed to Columbia Phonographic Broadcasting System.
Around 4 years later in 1931, CBS would establish an experimental TV station called W2AXB using the mechanical TV system and was the first station to have a regular seven day week broadcasting schedule. Around 10 years later as more conventional TV rolled around the W2AXB was renamed WCBW as it received a commercial construction permit and program authorisation making it the second fully commercial TV station in the USA. Of course with being one of the first this helped create a huge viewer base and this makes CBS one of the biggest TV stations around today.
Programme wise CBS is known for quite a few classics like Miami Vice, Family Ties, Cheers, Golden Girls and the list goes on. It is quite amazing when you consider how much CBS’s programming has contributed to the pop culture of the United States, the reach isn’t so far as other Networks may have but CBS definitely caters very well to its main viewers (Americans).
Nowadays CBS mainly home to many different daytime game shows stuff like The Price is Right, Let’s Make a Deal, Card Sharks, Press Your Luck etc. As we get towards the evening though talk shows start to peek out with The Late Show with David Letterman which is one of the most viewed of its type in the whole of the US. There is also The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson which whilst not as popular as what comes before it, it still does very well in the grand scheme of late night chat shows (of which there are an abundance).
CBS also broadcasts many news and political shows with their very popular breakfast and evening news programmes and their Sunday political debate programme Face the Nation.
