Find out if your ISP is doing transparent DNS proxy

  1. Enable Smart DNS on your PC / Mac using the SmartyDNS app or by setting up Smart DNS manually.

You can find tutorials on how to do that on our Support page.

  2. For Windows: press the Windows Key + R and type cmd, then press Enter to start the Command Prompt.

For macOS: go to Utilities and open the Terminal.

  3. In the opened Command Prompt / Terminal type:
    nslookup ip.smartydns.com

You should get a reply like this (depending of DNS country you have selected it can look slightly different):

Transparent DNS proxy Test: Step 1

If you see in your result at “Address:” (1) an IP address other than “136.243.3.103”, go to step 4 of this tutorial.

If you see the result as “136.243.3.103” then you have no problems using our DNS servers.

  4. In the opened Command Prompt / Terminal type:
    nslookup ip.smartydns.com 87.117.205.40

You should get as a reply something like this:

Transparent DNS proxy Test: Step 2

If you see in your result at “Address:” (2) an IP address other than “136.243.3.103” then your Internet Service Provider is doing Transparent DNS Proxy.

  5. How to Bypass Transparent DNS Proxy?

If the results of this test shows that your ISP is doing transparent DNS proxy, there are two available solutions:

    1. Follow our tutorial for bypassing Transparent DNS Proxy with a DD-WRT router.
    2. Or use our VPN service as an alternative solution to access regionally restricted media websites. Go to our support page, click on “Set up VPN” tab, then choose the tutorial for your device and follow it step by step.
