How to set up PPTP VPN on Windows 7

This tutorial will show you how to set up PPTP VPN on Windows 7 using the SmartyDNS VPN services. If you don’t have a SmartyDNS account, you can try our services for free for 3 days.

Here are the steps you should follow:

1. Click on “Network and Sharing center” (1) from the “Control Panel” section.

2. Then click on “Set up a new connection or network” (2).

3. Choose “Connect to a workplace” (3), then click “Next” (4).

4. After that select “Use my Internet Connection (VPN)” (5).

5. Click on “Internet Address” field (6) and type the IP address of the SmartyDNS server you want to connect to.

   To find the entire list of all available servers, sign in to your account on our website, go to “Setup” -> “VPN Servers“. If you don’t have a SmartyDNS account, you can try our services for free for 3 days.

   Type SmartyDNS (PPTP) in the “Destination name” field (7). Check the “Don’t connect now; just set it up so I can connect later” checkbox (8). Then click “Next” (9).

6. In the username (10) and password (11) fields type your VPN username and password, then click “Create” (12).

   Assure you use your VPN username and password from your package, NOT the website account credentials. To find your VPN username and password, sign in to your account on our website, go to “Setup” -> “VPN Username & Password“. If you don’t have a SmartyDNS account, you can try our services for free for 3 days.

7. You should see “The connection is ready to use” screen. Click “Close” (13) to return to the “Network and Internet” screen.

8. Click on “Connect to a network” tab (14).

9. Now you should see your “SmartyDNS” connection in the “Connect to a network” screen. Right click on it, then choose “Properties” (15).

10. Choose “Security” tab (16) and for “Type of VPN” choose “Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP)” (17). Under “Data Encryption” choose “Optional encryption (connect even if no encryption)” (18). “Allow these protocols” (19) and check: “Challenge Handshake AuthenticationProtocol (CHAP)” and “Microsoft CHAP Version 2 (MS-CHAP v2)” boxes (20). Then click “OK” button (21).

11. Choose “Networking” Tab (22). Check the “Internet Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and “Client for Microsoft Networks” (23). Then click “OK” (24).

You can now use this connection. In order to connect or disconnect to SmartyDNS server, right click on the connection icon which is viewable at “Change adapter settings”, then choose connect/disconnect.
